North Berwick RFC U14s won the Greenyards Shield at Melrose youth 7s for the second year in succession. Our U16s also played exceptionally well and were beaten finalists on a glorious sunny day in The Borders.
The U14s squad had victories over Gala, Langholm and a Borders Barbarian team, scored 24 tries in the process, to set up a final with Howe of Fife. Howe battled hard and despite playing one game less than our U14s could not match the pace of the NB team. Final score North Berwick 42, Howe of Fife 7.
The U16 team had a tough draw but saw off Heriots and hosts Melrose in their pool. A superb display in their semi final earned them a 38-0 victory over Howe of Fife and a place in the final against Peebles. Last minute call offs and representative call ups had left our squad reduced to nine players and the day's previous matches had taken their toll. The well-drilled Peebles team took the Dummond Cup by 48 points to 7.
Overall a good weekend for North Berwick youth rugby. A victory at U18 in our inaugural 10s tournament on Saturday and Gold and Silver medals for the second successive year at Melrose. Well done to all those involved!
