NB win on the road with a 27:30 victory against Perthshire to put them 5th in national league 4. 8 games into the league season and NB have 5 wins.
NB picked up where they left off last week with a first half where they maximised the possession they had to score 3 converted tries and looked solid in defence. The first try came 5 mins in when Stu Lorimer broken the line , gave a tip to Alex Williams who put Milan Stewart in for the score. The 2nd try followed a similar pattern when Lorimer took the ball to the line tipped to Stewart who kicked through for Alex Williams to pick up and touch down for a score. 0-14 after 12 mins. Perthshire responded well with a series of attacks but the NB defence held strong. When NB regained possession they broke quickly and were soon on the Perthshire half. Good strong carries from the pack put them on the 10 metre line and when Williams broke Finlay Graham was on his shoulder to take the pass and score a well worked try. 0:21. Perthshire responded well and tested the NB defence. Finally, a multi phase play saw the ball go wide and the winger went in in the corner 5:21 at half time. Perthshire took heart from their finish to the first half and after NB lost possession they capitalised and went in for their 2nd try after 45 mins.12:21. NB were getting bogged down in a forward battle and lost momentum . Perthshire retained possession, carried well and went over again for their 3rd try 17:21 . NB finally got hold of the ball and when Perthshire were penalised for a high tackle Alex Williams stepped up to the 10 metre line and put over the penalty for 3 points to steady the position.17:24. With 15 mins remained NB were back in their defence pattern but when cleared with a kick up field , Perthshire gathered and a nice interchange saw the winger in space and from the half way line he made it into the corner to score. The conversion from out wide hit the crossbar and went over- game tied 24:24 with Perthshire having the momentum . The scrums had been evenly matched all day but on 72 mins the ref gave a penalty to Perthshire for a collapse. The penalty went over and Perthshire took the lead for the first time 27:24. NB digged deep and held possession in the Perthshire half. A high tackle saw a penalty award and Williams stepped up to land his 5th kick of the day- all square with 5 mins remaining. It was Perthshire who were camped in the NB half but a turnover in the 22 saw NB throw the ball through the hands and centre Milan Stewart made 50 metres . The following series of rucks saw Perthshire offside and NB awarded a penalty. With the last kick of the game Williams slotted the 3 points and NB took the win. The man of the match award went to Archie Anderson who was dominant in the tackle throughout the 80 mins. Closely followed by Alex Williams for his 20 point haul and nerves of steel from the boot. NB travel to Dunfermline next week with their tails up and knowing there is more in the tank.
