NBRFC U14s gave another excellent performance to produce a fine win at Goldenacre against Heriots RFC. The wintery conditions were always going to be a challenge for players and spectators but the North Berwick lads executed their game plan to see off a Heriots team that battled through the match despite the score line.
The scoring was opened on 5 minutes with Sean Mackle going over in the corner after running a fine loop with winger Tom Grey. Tom again provided the pass to full Back Ru Smith for the second try a few minutes later he put Sean Mackle in for this second try, this time on the inside, after a dummy that took away the Heriots defence. North Berwick forwards were penalised several times for going off their feet at the breakdown but they continued to win good ball that gave the backs the opportunity to run. The forth try came when wing Harvey Elms collected a fine chip by Henry Slater over the heads of the rushing Heriots defence. Sean Mackle completed his hat-trick and the scoring for the first half again after some good back play that saw the ball moved through the hands at speed.
Heriots increased their efforts at the start of the second half and were close to scoring on several occasions but the North Berwick defence held strong. Full back Ru Smith completed his hat trick after two well timed runs into the line, the second of which was a perfectly executed double dummy scissors that was appreciated by all spectators. Heriots didn’t let their heads go down and were determined to get on the score sheet but some tenacious tacking by the North Berwick forwards held them at bay. The NB forwards were rewarded for all their efforts after they were first to the ball after a good NB break. Pete Jeffries touched down to in the corner and Ru Smith converted superbly to make the final score 29 points to 0 scoring eight tries in the process.
